NWA 4468 Primitive Shergottite Martian Meteorite 64mg - CRUSTED!
NWA 4468 Primitive Shergottite Martian Meteorite 64mg
5mm X 3mm X 2mm CRUSTED FRAGMENT!
64 milligram fragment of NWA 4468, a Primitive Enriched Olivine Basaltic Shergottite Martian meteorite. A single 675-gram, wonderfully fresh and mostly crusted stone was purchased in Western Sahara in July 2006 (see full story in the November 2006 issue of Meteorite Magazine). NWA 4468 does not have an olivine-phyric texture like some Martian meteorites, yet unlike all other enriched basaltic shergottites NWA 4468 is quite olivine-rich and also has large, early-formed orthopyroxene oikocrysts. Similarities to another known Martian meteorite in bulk FeO and most Mg-rich olivine composition indicate that NWA 4468 represents a primitive Martian magma, and is less magmatically evolved than Shergotty, Zagami, and other olivine-free basaltic Shergottites. NWA 4468 is by far one of the most beautiful Martian meteorites known and would make for a worthy specimen in any serious collection.
